Question:
How do I create a screen shot to send to you for help?
These instructions are for Microsoft Windows
To send us a screenshot, you will need to capture the screen, save the image, and send it, following the instructions below.
To capture the entire display (full screenshot) - used when more than one window is needed or the window needed is very large.
- Press the Print Screen (PrtScr) key on the keyboard.
To capture only the active window (partial screen) - most useful for error message pop-up windows and the like.
- Make sure that the portion of the screen that you want to capture is on top of any other windows.
- Hold down the ALT key while pressing Print Screen (PrtScr) on the keyboard.
To save the image
- If you have a graphics editing program (PaintShop Pro or similar) that can create .GIF or .JPG images, start it now. Otherwise, Windows comes with Microsoft Paint - go to Start > Run and type mspaint.exe and click OK.
- Create a new blank image in the graphics editor.
- Paste the screenshot into the new image. In most programs, this is done by going to Edit > Paste.
- Save the image to your hard drive. Give it a filename that includes a reference to your case number, HostPilot username, or other useful information. For example, if my account name is "webguru" I might name it "webguru - Outlook error.jpg". If the option is available, you should save the image in .GIF or .JPG format. You can save it in .BMP format, but it will be very large. Unfortunately, we cannot accept images in formats which require a special program (e.g., .PDF).
To send the image
Once you have created your screenshot, you can attach it to an email message.
To capture your screen (or part of it) on a Mac, use one of the following commands.
- Entire screen: Apple (Command) Key +Shift+3
Captures a picture of the entire desktop, which is saved on the desktop as a file called 'picture #'. This option lets you capture the whole screen. If you want just one window on your screen, you will have to edit the picture using image editing software (or use one of the other commands, instead).
- Partial screen: Apple (Command) Key +Shift+4
Allows you to use your mouse to select a specific part of your desktop for capture. When your mouse pointer turns into an "x", hold down the mouse button and drag to select the part of the screen you want. When you release the button, the screenshot will capture the selected part of the screen. Press Esc to release.
- Selected window: Apple (Command) Key +Shift+4 then press Spacebar
Allows you to select which window to capture.
